Aergoth was the capital of the Aergosian Empire, and for much of the Age of Exploration, Age of Knowledge, and debatedly the Age of Wars, the most important city on Idryllia. It originated as the landing camp of Altalaran explorers, and stood (to varying degrees) until the early days of the Age of Reclamation, when it would be rebuilt as Solsguard.

History[]

Age of Exploration[]

After the Primordial Wars, the Altalarans continued to explore the land, but finding themselves locked in ongoing battles with the Primordial Races despite their masters defeat, established a port settlement to receive supplies from their homeland. Over time, this settlement became a capital of the humans, and after Yvera raised Altalar, became the seat of power itself, forgetting their original homeland.

Amidst the gathered populace, the machinations of the Dark Source found some purpose, and the humans began to split into two groups, done keeping to the old ways while the other began to grow ambitious and seek domination of the continent. These would later become the Wilderlanders and Aergosians , as the city grew and began founding new settlements and colonies, pushing back Primordial Races and other Altalaran cultures alike.

Age of Knowledge[]

As Aergoth's power approached its zenith, it produced a mage, Laycindarius , who discovered a new form of ether that allowed previously impossible magical techniques. Aided by Laycindarius and his Arcane Society , Aergoth's power began to dominate the entire continent. A series of ill turns would weaken the empire though, including troubles with its northern front (largely the separation of Carpath)and the Daemon incursion .

The exposure of the Arcane Society at the end of the Age would result in widespread rioting and conflicts between Aergoth's military and the Society, beginning the destruction of several city districts. The death of the last emperor further destabilized matters, and the empires final collapse ended many of its alliances and trade arrangements, leaving it to fend for itself.

Age of Wars[]

Reduced to its own resources for survival, Aergoth would nonetheless weather its ongoing war with Laycin , stubbornly surviving throughout the Age. During the Time of Transcendence, the ensuing unstable ether damaging the world as a result of the battle between Stormwind and Laycindarius would ravage the city, and Laycindarius delivered a final burst of destruction on it personally during his return to Akrylonor.

Age of Cataclysm[]

The Aergosian tendency for stubborn survival continued, as refugee camps formed on the edge of the ruin and they sought to salvage and rebuild. While the re-emergence of the Beastmen guarded them from Laycin's expansion efforts, they found themselves engaged with the Scaled Folk , who also rose from their marsh to claim a swath of the city. The arrival of Xylnulifein 's Daemons from the western isles, no longer impeded by The Shard only made the struggle more hopeless.

Age of Reclamation[]

Although the Daemons were defeated, Aergoth would not be rebuilt in the Age of Reclamation, as the surviving Mariners from Bastion would build the new city of Solsguard atop the old ruin (along with many Gear Gnomes , and some of the remaining Aergosians), completeing Aergoths demise as a city.
