Kalas (Born Kalen Belamont, and formerly under the alias of Stormwind) is one of the New Gods, presiding mainly over Hallows Gate and overseeing the departure of souls from Akrylonor. Often acting as a villain in his mortal life, his more recent actions aided in banishing the Dark Source, and his new persona seems to be a more balanced one. He has a perennial rivalry with Laycindarius, and also numerous conflicts with Xan.
Persona and Relations[]
Kalas' agenda is rather unclear, though he seems content enough to do his duties in an unbiased form. Although no longer a primary contributor to Akrylonor's ongoing history, he maintains a flair for dramatics, as evidenced by his binding of Xylnulifein's spirit, and the creation of his Gravebinders, a Knight Order designed to mimic and compete with the Dawn Legion.
He maintains a loose alliance of sorts with Eli, co-operating when their interests coincide. Valar and many of the other former Companions that became New Gods hold a distrust of him from his prior actions, and Valar only co-operated in binding Xylnulifein under duress, and to leave the spirit of Tolinus Firebeard to spy on Kalas' activities.
He has an antagonistic relationship with his former allies in the Dark Revenants, though only completely hostile with Xan, the pair having both murdered the other at different points. Much of his mortal life was spent seeking revenge on Laycindarius for the murder of his parents, an agenda he has pursued to destructive ends (and his first death), and he likely still schemes to bring this about.
Dogma[]
Kalas' clergy spends its time making sure the dead are properly attended , and hunting down Revenants and other forms of undead. They also collect lore and maintain libraries, though their purpose in such is not entirely clear.
History[]
Age of Wars Kalen Belamont was the son of Adam and Mariana Belamont (a Daiannar, accounting for his extended lifespan). He would be orphaned at a young age when Adam perished in battle with Laycindarius, and The Shard's enactment forced Mariana back to her home on the Plane of Air. Initially a ward of the Temple of the Elements, his talent for magic would manifest itself, and he moved into an apprenticeship under the Hooded Stranger at the Tower of the Sepulchre. In the course of studying there, he would learn of his fathers fate, and studying the towers records for clues, make an abrupt departure, disappearing for almost 40 years. (Events thereof are presented in 'Baptism in Shadow')
He would resurface again as a mercenary knight, offering services to the city state of Laycin. Leading his recruited followers in through the upper extremities of the Underworld, he launched several successful strikes against Aergoth, and was awarded an honorary councillorship in Laycin. Using this position, he accessed Laycin's archives, stealing several tomes and making his escape again into the Underworld.
Emerging at Delwynvale, he again indebted the locals to himself by slaying the Brobdangeon Lord Jabal, ending a threat to the village. Studying old stories of the battle against Xanatumyich the Destroyer, he would raid the towns catacombs, and steal the Skull of Xanatumyich, kept there for safety, defeating several opposing adventurers in his escape (Who would go on to found the Dawn Legion to prevent such threats)
Kalen would go on to Obsidian City to find Thul'Masira, following advice from Xan through the medium of the Skull. Joining forces with Eli to defeat an ambush by Coldars, the pair would continue their alliance to venture into the Underworld and destroy the surviving form of Xanatumyich.
Thus securing his audience, Kalen consulted with Thul'Masira on how to breach The Shard and reach Laycindarius. Deciding upon the Rift Device, Stormwind's team would proceed to Ellondir to seek the source of the Phantoms there. Surviving Ellondir's cursed denizens, and venturing deep below into the nest of Phantoms, they recovered the device and returned to Obsidian City.
Working together with Thul'Masira channelling the Dark Source's power through the Rift Device, Stormwind was successful in breaking The Shard, and transporting himself to Laycindarius' sanctum. Battling the guardians there, he soon garnered the archmage's attention, and their ensuing battle would cause the Night of Falling Stars. Bested by the far more experienced mage, Stormwind would make a final gambit of directing destruction at Laycin, diverting Laycindarius' attention long enough to make his escape.
Age of Cataclysm[]
Stormwind would quickly rejoin with his former followers and proclaim himself returned as a god. Rebuilding Dessecar's fallen tower into the fortress of Black Sands, the cult established a base to work from. Aided by his new found followers, Stormwind began seeking the legendary Fang of Kabal, said to hold a portion of the fallen Primordial's power, to use as a weapon against Laycindarius.
With his recruits aid, he would claim the Fang, even as the Second Daemon War raged on. Taking up the weapon, he lured Laycindarius into a second battle, and gained the upper hand. However, interference by Yvera, come to claim the Fang as a potential threat to the Elder Dragons, would distract him, and allow Laycindarius to finish him off, bringing down the mountain on the uncovered tomb of Kabal and Stormwind with it.
Age of Reclamation[]
Stormwind would next walk Akrylonor when summoned as one of three Dark Revenants to aid Xan. Forced to accept the summoning as a result of binding himself to the Dark Source to wield its power in the Age of Wars. The Revenant Army, initially successful began to falter in the face of a united Northrealm. During the New Companions assault on Black Sands, now the Dark Revenants fortress, Stormwind saw Elias Valar brutally slaughtered by Dessecar after he defeated Mizail in a hard fought contest, and the parallel to his own father's demise snapped him out of the Source's hold to slay Dessecar. His freedom would be short-lived, as Xan would soon dispatch Stormwind in similar fashion.
In the final battle to banish the Dark Source at Hallows Gate, Stormwind would reunite with Eli and the druidess (and later New God) Thaera to do battle with Xan. While Xan was able to avoid being cast through the gate with an illusion, he was also unable to stop the Source's banishment. After the battle, acknowledging Stormwind's aid, Eli transferred the Death Aspect to him, leaving him the duty of guarding Hallows Gate.
Age of Mortals[]
As the other New Gods returned to the world, so did Stormwind, but now under the guise of Kalas. Seeking to avoid his prior reputation, he immediately established the Gravebinder order to hunt down remaining Revenants, and his priests are aggressive in promoting his new image. Kalas, Valar, Tolinus Firebeard, and Matthias would also bind Xylnulifein's wandering soul at Hallows Gate (see 'Souls Keeper')
