Revenants are the dead of Draconic Races , that have either been abandoned in Hallows Gate, or resisted efforts to send them through to the Void. In order for a Revenant to cross back into Akrylonor, it requires that they have substantial power or binding to the world, or are summoned by a potent entity purposefully.
The most common cause of Revenants was the Ancestor Worship practised by several of the races. Such would channel ether to the Revenant and grant them enough potency to manifest back in Akrylonor.
The Revenant Crisis, orchestrated by the Dark Source, involved several of its former agents being summoned to serve as the “Dark” Revenants, leading an army of bound Revenant souls that had accumulated at Hallows Gate since the demise of Nyrghaul. Kalas has since taken over sending the souls through the gate, and his Gravebinders hunt down stray Revenants who escape back into Akrylonor. The Dawn Legion also takes on such activities, although the two share their patrons' mutual distrust.
Revenants vary in how much of a physical form they have accumulated, ranging from ethereal spirits to fully able physical bodies. Being already dead, Revenants are often obvious by their lack of disease, or caution in extreme weather or other hazards. Even the most subtle ones have an indefinable quality to them, making others uneasy around them. Revenants who have absorbed substantial ether from worshippers often manifest magical traits, some actively, and others in passive form.
All the New Gods (save Laycindarius) are technically Revenants, having crossed to Hallows Gate and returned, although their power manifests in different ways and few would note them as such.
Primordial Races can manifest their ancestors spirits, a practice most notable amongst the Tel-Kabal , but as they don't arrive at Hallows Gate, they are considered distinctive from Revenants.
