The Leviathan is one of the Primordials, and the oldest among their number. It may also be the most powerful, though its true powers have never been fully exercised. Unlike the other Primordials it dwells in the oceans of Akrylonor, possibly owing to having grown to a much vaster size over time. It is notable for creating the Praeten race, as well as holding much of the Elder Dragon Nyrghaul 's power after his death, giving it a grasp of fate and perception of time that allows it to see beyond the present.
Persona And Relations[]
The Leviathan has remained distant from most affairs of Idryllia since the Primordial Wars , when it aligned with Varthiir to slay the Elder Dragon Nyrghaul. Even amongst its progeny, the Praetens, its worshipped as a distant primal force more than an entity of direct influence. Mariners also pay veneration to it, though primarily as an appeasement of a potential destructive force, having gained this perception over years of skirmishes with the Praetens.
As might be expected, the remaining Elder Dragons bear The Leviathan no good will, due to its part in Nyrghaul's death. Its disinterest in the ongoing affairs of Idryllia separate it from the other Primordials, and while it played a crucial part in imparting knowledge to the New Gods , it has little contact with them in recent times.
History[]
The Lost Age[]
At some point in the Lost Ages, the Leviathan dwelled on Idryllia like the other Primordials, before growing too vast to dwell on the surface and transitioning into the sea. When the Primordials began creating their child races, it followed suit, creating the island dwelling Praetens, but never maintained a strict governance over them in the fashion of the others.
Primordial Wars[]
The Praetens were among the first of the Primordial Races to encounter the Altalaran settlers, albeit only in brief raids. As the battles moved onto the Idryllian continent proper, the role of The Leviathan became minor, until it aligned in a plan with Varthiir to ambush the Elder Dragon Nyrghaul. Following the success of this endeavour, The Leviathan would acquire Nyrghauls aspects over Fate and Time, while Varthiir took control of those of Death. Influenced by these new perceptions, it vanished into the ocean depths for some time.
Age of Settlement[]
As knowledge of Elder Dragons and Primordials alike faded, the Altalarans who remained after the ascension of New Altalar became the sea-faring Mariner folk. Legends of The Leviathan, along with a distorted form of Aquar, the Elder Dragon of Water, would form the opposing sea gods of benevolence and destruction in their formed superstitions.
Age of Knowledge[]
Its unknown if the Leviathan was sealed outside The Shard , or lurked in the waters near enough to Idryllia to be sealed within.
Age of Cataclysm[]
When the Temple of the Seven was restored, and Aquar revealed as the Mariner's sea god, it was thought that The Leviathan might simply be another aspect of the Elder Dragon. Aquar himself would reveal the Primordials existence to New Gods to-be.
Age of Reclamation[]
When the New Gods were seeking the Death Aspect, following the words of Aquar and histories from the Temple of the Seven, they managed to summon The Leviathan using Praeten rituals. It directed them to Varthiir's holding of the power before returning to the depths.
Age of Mortals[]
The Leviathan seems to be removed from events once more, though its Praetens continue to worship it, and tribute is still payed by the Mariners of Solsguard before heading on long voyages.
